Stephen Hilton suggests over here that the need for collaboration around climate change may push councils into use of social media - and presumably new approaches to knowledge sharing. Other drivers, opportunities?

In response to Mark and David, the whole point of the Knowledge Hub is to be able to link people, groups and conversations who share a common interest or goal. The voluntary (third) sector is a key part of the public service sector, as are the multitude of agencies and NGOs. The 'clever' bit of the Khub is that we're not forcing any of these groups or organisations to move their conversations or network platforms to the Khub. All we need is a feed of some sort (RSS/XML) and a taxonomy (to ensure we're able to link data and add context) and the Khub will do the rest, identifying opportunities for joining up networks (and hence conversations). So, in a rather long-winded way, I'm saying no-one in the sector is excluded; the only criteria (given this is a CLG sponsored project) is that it must have something to do with service or efficiency improvement.

Also agree with David's point - it would be good to add a 3rd sector dimension to the scenarios that we're developing.

Right now we have some communities with strong participation from local partners, including the voluntary sector. We'd hope to see that increasing. It may be that there need to be some 'walls' placed around some conversations....if they are particularly sensitive. But we're going to try to encourage a default position of opennesss.

It would be interesting to play through a scenario (s) with strong 3rd sector involvement, and see what that means for khub configuration/procedures. We used bits of the socialbysocial game, and I'm sure it could be made more DIY playable locally if you were interested. The idea of moving discussions into this space is to encourage that sort of collaborative design/testing (over to Steve and Ingrid)

maybe some of the NIs that relate directly to the third sector (6 and 7 I think?) could provide a staring point for examining potential crossovers with 3rd sector?

Thanks Mark - I aim to blog something too. Briefly, my take was the Hub is really a cloud/network of content and of people at many levels from national to local. The way the clouds get configured is a bit like Twitter ... an event or a topic gets tagged and the network gets defined that way. Another trigger, another cloud/network. The configurations we talked about at the advisory group were around national indicators ... problems/tasks like youth offending, alcohol control, in the context of local strategic partnerships.
So yes, community and volorgs would be in the cloud/network, if the topic were relevant. It does raise some challenging issues about how far council officers and others are prepared to take part in cloud activities in public. Do they have one level of profile and exposure inside the council (s) and another outside?
But I'm not saying I'm right ... that's just my current mental model.

really helpful record of the meeting [in typical Wilcox style]
really interested in where local voluntary sector may come into the scenarios being reviewed [couldn't find any mention but watched it in front of the football on the telly so that doesn't mean it's not there]
can knowledge hub include third sector orgs?
